Middle, high school and community college students who have their sights set on a college degree can get the information they need about everything from financial aid and scholarships to admissions at the 2019 Education Summit.
Cal State East Bay is hosting the annual event Feb. 9 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on its Hayward campus. The goal is to increase the number of first-generation, African-American, Asian-American, Latino, Native American and Pacific Islander students who go to college.
“I am a first-generation college student and an example of how education can profoundly change one’s life,” said Cal State East Bay President Leroy M. Morishita. “Although my parents faced hardship and discrimination in their lives, they believed that a college education was the path to a better life for their children. There is always a way and there is always help.”
The goal of the summit is to give students and parents the assistance they need to understand the options and strategies to navigate the university system and put a successful plan in action. It is free to participants and lunch will be provided. There will be workshops, motivational speakers and a college and resource fair.
“As education leaders and supporters serving the East Bay region, we know that our work must reflect the diversity of the communities served by our institutions,” Morishita said. “We are committed to improving access to higher education for all students and ensuring that underrepresented students complete programs successfully, graduate from college and become productive members of our communities and the next generation of leaders."
