A new program launched fall quarter at 绿帽换妻, East Bay is meeting the needs of working health care professionals. A master of science degree in health care administration (MS-HCA), offered completely online, proved immediately popular.

"For the Fall '12 cohort, we received over 60 admissions applications, of whom 38 were admitted and enrolled in courses," said Toni Fogarty, chair for the Department of Public Affairs and Administration.

In 2008 the National Center for Education Statistics found that 14 four-year and WASC (Western Association of Schools and COlleges) accredited institutions offered graduate programs related to health services management or administration in California, including five CSUs. Cal State East Bay is the only CSU with a fully online degree program.

The need for health services managers is growing nationally and statewide. The U.S. Department of Labor estimates that health care is one of the largest industries in the United States, and the second largest employer, with more than 11 million jobs. Employment in health care administration is expected to increase 16 percent from 2008 to 2018, according to the United States Occupational Outlook Handbook 2010-2011.

绿帽换妻's fully online MS-HCA program will help California meet its growing health care workforce needs, provide its graduates well-paying and challenging employment, and will help improve access and quality in health care services for Californians and other U.S. residents, Fogarty said.

Students Tanefer Lumukanda and Hang Tran, nutrition assistants for Alameda County, share a desire to improve people's lives from behind the scenes.

"I decided on a master's in health care administration, because I wanted to gain a better undestanding of the business of health care," Lumukanda said. "I would like to be in a position one day to impact health care on a grand scale through policy, advocacy, leadership and management."

Tran, expressing her hopes for the future, said, " I ... look forward to utilizing the information I obtain from the coursework to apply to real life situations in the work that I do now and possibly for aother career paths after the completion of the program."

The program is accepting applications for Fall 2013, and Fogarty expects the number of applications will grow. The deadline is April 15, but interested students, she said, "should submit their application materials sooner rather than later."
