The Undocumented Student Resources logo was designed in 2017 by Cal State East Bay Multimedia student Marcus Creel. Originally he created a logo for the UndocuAlly community on campus, inspired by a version of a monarch butterfly which migrates annually. While butterflies historically have represented endurance, change, hope and life, the monarch was adapted as a contemporary symbol by immigration activists coming to the U.S. Using a style reminiscent of stained glass, Creel’s logos depict views of the East Bay’s familiar bridges, the bay and skylines of Hayward and San Francisco, blended with the spirit of the monarch.
Creel is a senior in the GANAS Program and said that his Puente counselor Elizabeth Costanza recommended Cal State East Bay because of the support he would find within GANAS. Creel said it was the “deciding factor” in his attending East Bay. Creel transferred to Cal State East Bay from Los Medanos Community College and is a graduate of Pittsburg High School in Pittsburg, California. He has won awards including the Congressional Art Appreciation Award and an alumni scholarship at Cal State East Bay for a multimedia art piece titled The Martyr. Creel is an active member of Oakland Digital, a non-profit design studio and digital literacy center.
