What is Duo Multi-Factor Authentication(MFA)?
Duo Multi-factor authentication adds a second layer of security to your online accounts. Verifying your identity using a second factor (like your phone or other mobile device) prevents anyone but you from logging in, even if they know your password.
How to Self-Enroll in Duo MFA at CSU East Bay
- Login to the “” portal.
- You will be redirected to enter your NetID and password. After logging in, you will need to scroll to the bottom of the page.
- When you see the following prompt, click “Start setup”.
- Pick a device to use for enrollment. For a description of these options, see the appendix.
-Select your preferred device and click “Continue”. - The most chosen device is a “Mobile phone”, as displayed below.
-Enter your phone number, check the confirmation below the number and click “Continue”. - Select the type of device you wish to use. The first 3 require an app to be installed on your mobile phone, however, you can choose “Other” if you want to use text messages instead of a mobile app, or if you have a non-smart cell phone;if you want to pick “Other”, please proceed to step 12.
-After selecting a type of smartphone you have, click “Continue”.
- At this point, you will need to switch to your smartphone and install the “Duo Mobile” app on it from the app store.
-Once the app is installed on your smartphone, click “I have Duo Mobile installed”.
NOTE: If you have an older smartphone, and/or you cannot locate the “Duo Mobile” app in the app store, please press the “Back” button on the computer screen and proceed to step 12. and use a device type of “Other”, which uses text messages for Duo authentication instead of an app. - Once you’ve installed the app on your smartphone, open the app and activate it by following the app prompts. Click Add Account or the + symbol in the upper-right corner.
- Use the built-in scanner to activate the Duo app on your smartphone.
-Simply hold your phone up to your computer screen. If you are not able to scan the code, you can click the link to have an activation link emailed to your personal email.
- Success! (if you received a scan confirmation screen, click “Continue”)
-On this screen, make sure that the “When I log in” option is set to “Ask me to choose an authentication method.” and then click “Continue to Login”. - Done, you’re ready to use Duo!
-The page displayed below is what you will see when you login to campus applications. Be sure to check the “Remember me for 12 hours” so that you do not have to login again for 12 hours.

- This step is for enrolling a cell phone that does not have the Duo Mobile app installed. You should choose “Other” if you want to use text messages instead of a mobile app, or if you have a non-smart cell phone.

-On this screen, make sure that the “When I log in” option is set to “Ask me to choose an authentication method.” and then click “Continue to Login”. - Done, you are ready to use Duo!
