Between the University and the IACUC, CSU East Bay's Animal Care and Use Program strives to adhere to highest standards of compliance and research impact for our community. As such, there are several agencies' and policies we adhere to achieve this.

CSU East Bay Policies

Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) Policy

Campus specific initiatives ensure all animal related activities have been reviewed by the IACUC. There are several activities that can be awarded an exemption status, and we encourage investigators to consult with the IACUC to see if an exemption is possible by reaching out to us at iacuc@csueastbay.edu.

To ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulatory policies, the IACUC at CSU East Bay is constituted following PHS policy.

The Animal Care Program provides are variety of resources to investigators and their research teams, including but not limited to safety trainings, animal care specific training, access to animal care technician, a veterinarian, and more.

Regulatory Federal Agencies and Other Resources

Several federal agencies may assist in the governance of the Animal Care Program pending type(s) of species and/or work conducted within the animal care facilities and/or if an investigator has been awarded a grant from a granting agency:

1. : Provides specfic guidance to institutions when investigators work with USDA covered species (e.g. agricultural animals, non-human primates, canines, felines). Oversight of approved work and will collaborate with IACUC to ensure compliance with all research standards. 
   
   
2. : Provides specific guidance to institutions when investigators have been awarded federal grant(s) from NIH, CDC, FDA, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), Office of Global Affairs (OG), and more (please contact either the IACUC or Office of Research and Sponsored Programs for comprehensive list). PHS-OLAW have oversight of approved work and will collaborate with IACUC to ensure compliance with all research standards.
   
   
3. : Will issue permits to work with specific species (e.g. fish or birds) in the field. Investigators are required to follow all guidelines listed from permitting agency while conducting the work.
   
   
4. : A private organization that promotes the humane treatment of animals in science. Provides resources such as trainings and Animal Care Program inspections for the purpose of compliance with research standards.
   
   
5.  Requires annual registration for facilities not already registered with any other agency for compliance with state policies regarding animal related activities.
