About COPA
Cohort Onboarding Pipeline for Advisors (COPA)
The goal of the cohort hire program is to centralize recruitment, training, and onboarding efforts of advisors (SSPs) to help fill vacancies over the next two academic years. Onboarded advisors will be in a learning community to work together and gain a panoramic understanding of advising at East Bay. COPA learning communities are designed to provide intensive training before advisors are matched and assigned to a specific department. The training is rooted in the growth mindset and all COPA’s read and discussed “mindset” by Carol Dweck in order to apply the teachings and philosophies to both themselves and our students. COPA’s learned the NACADA Core Competencies and developed their own advising philosophies which they applied to three advising theories/philosophies; Trauma Informed, Appreciative Advising, and Asset Based Advising. COPA participants worked through student case studies applying what they learned before finishing their training with university policies and procedures, case management techniques, and were assigned between various advising offices to learn the specifics of each office.
