Adding Authorizations or Teaching Areas

See the options below on options to add additional subjects to your teaching credential.

Individuals who hold a General or Standard basic teaching credential may obtain an additional multiple or single subject instruction authorization by verifying subject matter competency in the subject area sought.

An introductory Subject Matter Authorization authorizes the holder to teach the subject matter content typically included in curriculum guidelines and textbooks approved for study in grades 9 and below. Introductory and Specific Subject Matter Authorizations in core academic subject areas as an additional option to meet the "highly qualified" requirement under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB). Although NCLB is no longer in effect, educators may still receive Subject Matter Authorizations to expand their authorized content are of instruction.

Holders of Multiple Subject or Single Subject Teaching Credentials may have one or more of the subject listed below added to their credential as a supplementary authorization by verifying completion of the requirements below:

  1. Completion of 20 semester units (or 10 upper-division semester units) of non-remedial course in the subject, completed at a regionally accredited community college, or university or;
  2. A collegiate major from a regionally-accredited college or university in a subject directly related to the subject to be listed.

Please note that all candidates who have completed or are enrolled in our current Mild to Moderate Support Needs and Extensive Support Needs Preliminary Credential Programs are authorized to work with students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (and, thus, do not need the added ASDAA). Special education teachers who completed older special education credential programs may want to consider adding the ASDAA.

Admission Requirement

Applicants must currently hold a preliminary Education Specialist Credential.

Program Requirements

To earn the ASDAA, candidates must complete the following courses:

Fall semester
SPED 602A Autism Spectrum Disorders: Characteristics and Etiology ( 2 units)
SPED 604 Individual and School-Wide Behavioral Needs, Mental Health & Positive Supports (4 units)
 
Spring semester
SPED 605 Communication and Technology (4 units)
SPED 608 Instruction and Behavioral Supports and Strategies; Extensive Support Needs (4 units)
